Woodentots Montessori Nature Nursery takes outdoor learning one step further bringing together Montessori and Outdoor Learning.

Forest School complements the Montessori Ethos enabling children to make decisions and take risks; climbing trees and balancing on logs and offers the children opportunities to reconnect with Nature.

The magic of Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill fields, offers a multi-sensory classroom. Did you know there over 800 identified trees, 180 bird species and 23 species of butterflies on the Heath? We want to explore the endless learning opportunities this precious green space in London provides.

Our Herbert Street School has been steadily growing since opening in January 2015 and we now have a group of children enjoying a gentle rhythm of Montessori and Nature led learning We have developed our outdoor deck to offer activities to complement Forest School, such as hammering nails, playing with the mud kitchen and mixing potions.

Our beautiful classroom is equipped with Montessori materials and natural toys, carefully chosen for their play value. The children are introduced to the Montessori ‘work cycle’ where little by little independence grows by self – selecting materials and replacing back to the shelf after use. Each child has a ‘key worker’ who will begin to introduce your child to the different areas of the classroom.

Each week we bake bread, join in with a local music group and each day we end with ‘candle-time’ for songs, a story and time to reflect. Each day the children go on an expedition to the Heath, Kentish Town Farm or Parliament hill playground, using the community as a classroom offering first hand real experiences. ‘Explore bags’ are taken out to enrich the experience, for example bug boxes, binoculars to take a closer look at nature, or pots and pans for sand play. To travel we use our ‘walking wagon’ to make this possible we have a high ratio of 1–4 adults to children.

Back at ‘base’ our bright and welcoming classroom is equipped with Montessori materials where the children are introduced to activities through presentations. Each week we bake bread and also enjoy creative movement classes. The toys and equipment are carefully chosen for their open-ended play value and we limit the use of plastic.

We will be offering 20 places with 4 teachers. This higher ratio of adults to children will enable us to be safe whilst out on our expeditions.

You are warmly welcomed to come and visit the setting. To make an appointment please email the school.
